The food pyramid is an excellent tool to help people make healthy food choices and can help people choose from a variety of foods, so people get the nutrients that needed. The pyramid shows us how much we need to eat from each food group. To get the nutrient we need, eat these foods everyday. Food pyramid includes five food groups, oils, and physical activity. We also can know which nutrients our body gets from each food group.
The five food groups is grain, vegetables, fruits,
dairy foods, and meat. Grain foods contain carbohydrate and B-vitamins which
help turn the foods we eat into energy that
our bodies need to work, play, and grow. Vegetables are rich in
nutrients, such as Vitamin C which our body needs to work properly and Vitamin
A which help us have healthy skin and good eyesight. Fruits provide Vitamin C
which helps our bodies heal and grow new cells. Dairy foods provide calcium and
mineral which helps build strong bones and teeth. Meat, beans, and nuts provide
protein which helps buil strong muscle.
Oils are not a food group, but we should unclude some
vegetable oils, fish, or nuts in our food choices each day. Oils are fats that
are liquid at room temperature, like the vegetable oils used in cooking. Oils
come from many different plants and from fish. Some oils are used mainly as
flavorings such as walnut oil and sesame oil. There are foods naturally high in
oils like nuts, olives, some fish, and avocados.
Physical activity simply means movement of the body
that uses energy. Walking, gardening, climbing the stairs, playing soccer, or
dancing the night away are all good examples of being active. For health
benefits, physical activity should be vigorous and add up to at least 30
minutes a day. Take it one step at a time. Instead of the elevator, take the
stairs to add a bit of extra activity into our routine.
Our bodies are unique, complicated machines. Foods is
our fuel. It gives us energy, vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that keep us
running smoothly. Each group on the pyramid contains certain nutrients. If we
eat foods from each group we’ll be sure to get all the nutrients we need.
There’s a lot to know about food and nutrition. Knowing about the food guide
pyramid gives us a good start at having a balanced diet and living a healthy
life style.
